is of course a great invention, but it does pose risk’s along with it. On a poorly secured network can others see and even steal your personal information. It is essential that you keep the password of your router well hidden and that you change the password from time to time. That also prevents your neighbors or your network can use! Read this article to learn how you can change your Wi-Fi password.
1 Open the configuration page of your router. You can access the configuration page of your router with a Web browser on a computer connected to the network. If you can’t connect using Wi-Fi, for example because you don’t remember your password, you can use an ethernet cable to connect your computer with your router. The standard addresses or routers are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.1.1 (Apple). Type the address in the address bar of your browser. If you can’t get to on this way of accessing the router configuration page, you can look up address by using a command prompt window. Press ⌘ Win + R and type cmd. In the window that appears type ipconfig and press your Enter ⌅. Look for the active connection in the list, and look at the Default Gateway address. This is usually the address of your router. If this fails you can reset your router for 30 seconds, press and hold the reset button on the router, then you set the router back to factory settings. Then search for the default ip address for this type of router and fill that in in the address bar of the browser. Some routers come with configuration software. If you have previously installed this software on your computer you can use this software instead of the browser.
fill in the user name and password of the router in. At each router you must log in first before you can access the configuration page. If you have never changed this is probably the user name ” admin ” and the password ” admin ” or ” password ” . This differs per model, so first, find online or in the manual what the user name and password set by the manufacturer are. If you have ever changed the login credentials and you’re forgetting you will need to reset the router. Pressure 30 seconds the reset button of the router, then you set the router back to factory settings. This you should do if you have a second hand router and you know the login details not.
3 now go to the section \ \ \ ‘ Wireless \ ‘. At the top of the page or in a sidebar you will find a section with the name \ \ ‘ \ \ ‘ \ \ ‘ or Wi-Fi Wireless \ \ ‘. Click on this tab menu. If this section contains multiple submenu’s you should search for the submenu \ \ ‘ Wireless Security \ \ ‘.
change the password 4. Look for the window with the title ” Password ” , ” Passphrase ” or ” Shared Key ” . Now you can type in a new password. Often you will have to type the password again to confirm. Always try to come up with a strong password that is difficult or impossible to guess. It should never contain personal information. Make up a combination of lower case and large letters, numbers, and symbols as ” ! ” , ” $ ” and ” # ” . A strong password consists of at least 8 characters.
5 check the security type. There are three common types of wireless encryption: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. Choose WPA2 for the most secure encryption. As older devices because of this no longer connect to the network you can choose WPA. It is strongly discouraged to opt for WEP encryption, a WEP password can be cracked within 30 minutes.
6 change the name of the network. Now you’re at it you’d better change the network name. This name should never contain personal information such as your own name, because the name will be visible to everyone. Changing the name gives a better security, because in general it is easier to break in on a network with an unmodified (set by the manufacturer) name.
7 save the settings. When you have finished entering the new password, click on ” Apply ” or ” Save ” . The location of this button varies by router, but usually you can find the button at the top or bottom of the window. After clicking on the button the router will equally need to the newly established process information, all currently connected devices will then lose the connection. After that you can reconnect to the network, use your new password.
Tips Choose not your real name as name for your network. Your neighbors or people on the street can see the name, it’s better from a security point of view, if people do not know that the network is yours.
Warnings choose a secure and strong password. Do not use passwords like ” password ” , ” key ” , ” 12345 ” or names and birth dates that are easy to guess.
